OTTAWA – City council has approved a city-owned site near LeBreton Flats for a new central library.
During Wednesday meeting, council voted 21-1 to partner with Library and Archives Canada to build the new facility at 557 Wellington St., on the corner of Albert and Commissioner Streets.
Somerset councillor Catherine McKenney was the lone dissenter.
The city’s estimated portion of funding for the $168-million facility would be $99 million, though Library and Archives Canada still has to confirm federal funding.
The library board hopes to break ground on the new central library in 2018, and open the new library by 2020.
Some residents have panned the site, with some arguing that the location isn’t nearly as central nor accessible as they think it should be.
