OTTAWA – A final decision will be made Tuesday on the fate of Rideau High School.
Ottawa-Carleton District School Board trustees have recommended the school close its doors for good at the end of this school year.
The plan has received backlash from many in the community who are concerned about the future of the schools 400 or so students, many from diverse backgrounds, that may not get the same level of attention, or special course selection, at another school.
Shawn Menard is a trustee with the board, and he tells Mark Sutcliffe on Ottawa Today, he’s hoping creative options can be considered to save the school.
Former Ottawa Police Chief Vern White has also issued a statement, penning as letter outlining what would be at stake if the school were to close, saying it would hurt many young people.

School board trustees have now recommended the closure of seven schools in Ottawa, as it tries to pare down expenses to fit within its provincial funding, and consolidate schools that are below-capacity.
If the closure is approved, Rideau High will close in June, with students transferring to Gloucester High School this September.
