OTTAWA — Residents in Ottawa-Vanier head to the polls Monday to choose their new Member of Parliament.
The riding has been a Liberal stronghold as Mauril Bélanger held onto the seat for more than 20 years. He was first elected in 1995 and won eight elections.
Bélanger died in August 2016, less than a year after the last federal election in October 2015.
He was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS in the fall of 2015.
He was long considered an important ally for French speakers, having worked to keep the Montfort Hospital in Ottawa open after the Ontario government threatened to close it in the late 1990’s.
Seven candidates are vying for the job: Mona Fortier for the Liberal Party, Adrian Papara for the Conservative Party, Emilie Taman for the NDP, Nira Dookeran for the Green Party, Damien Wilson for the Libertarian Party and Christina Wilson and John “The Engineer” Turmel are both independent candidates.
