OTTAWA — Canadians are gathering both at home and abroad in France to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
In Ottawa, two events are being held Saturday night and Sunday morning to remember those who served during the First World War battle.
A candlelight tribute takes place from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday with an overnight vigil by the Royal Canadian Army Cadets and musical performances.
The National War Memorial will also be lit up overnight.
On Sunday, a ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. with sentries standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier followed by performances, readings, a smudging ceremony and drumming performance.
More than 3,500 soldiers died and 7,000 were wounded over the four-day battle from April 9 to 12 1917 in France.
