Local teacher reassigned over inappropriate messages

OTTAWA – A local teacher who sent inappropriate messages to a student has been reassigned.

Ted Erland, a teacher with the Ottawa Catholic School Board, sent the messages while employed as a teacher at All Saints High School Kanata.

According to the Citizen, Erland was blocked by a female student he had been messaging on a social media application, and then began messaging a friend of the student who had blocked him.

That message read in part, “I’ve had the biggest crush on your best friend, but I can’t say anything.”

A guidance councillor discovered the messages, and Erland was suspended for 24 days.

Once the suspension was over, Erland was transferred to St. Paul High School.

Erland is listed as a teacher for the coming school year there, but when contacted by Postmedia, the school said he will be on leave when the school year begins.

No further disciplinary action will be taken against the science teacher.
