Police renew calls for tips in missing woman case

OTTAWA–Ottawa Police hope to shake loose some new leads on the whereabouts of Mary Papatsie.

Papatsie, 39, was reported missing in June. Her case was turned over to Major Crimes investigators in July due to what police are calling “red flags” about the case.

“[The case] came on the radar in June,” said Staff Sergeant Bruce Pirt. “She wasn’t reported missing for five weeks, so it made it a little difficult for us at the beginning of the investigation in terms of collecting video and interviewing witnesses, because memories weren’t that fresh.”

The fact that there have been no sightings or financial transactions connected with Papatsie makes the case highly suspicious, said Pirt, but he stops short of calling the disappearance a case of foul play.

“She just seemed to have disappeared off the face of the planet. There was nothing.”

Detectives have been in contact with the RCMP in the Baffin Island community of Pangnirtung, Nunavut, where Papatsie was raised.

Tips have dried up, and police are hoping a renewed call for tips will yield some new information, added Pirt.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Major Crime Section at 613-236-1222, ext. 5493, or anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or by downloading the Ottawa Police app.
