Fire crews rescue snake and rat from Vanier apartment

OTTAWA — Firefighters have rescued a pet snake and rat from an apartment fire in Vanier.

A 911 call came in at 3:27 Thursday afternoon, reporting heavy black smoke in the four storey apartment building at 298 Blake Boulevard.

A working fire was declared while crews were still enroute to the scene.

Firefighters engaged in a rapid fire attack, while other crews began a search of the third-floor unit, and had the kitchen fire under control about 12 minutes after the call came in.

They also rescued a pet snake and rat found safely in their cages.

A fire investigator has been called in to determine the cause of the fire.
