Precipitation records tumble

OTTAWA–Flooded roads, water-logged basements, washouts.
Residents in the Ottawa region may’ve thought they were experiencing spring all over again, and meteorologists watched the precipitation records tumble.
With 1,220mm of precipitation–boosted by the 102mm that fell Saturday to Monday morning–2017 is officially the wettest year on record, surpassing the 1174mm that fell in all of 1972.
And 2017 isn’t over yet.
Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimbell thinks it’s difficult to point to any one reason.
“You, know I think it’s just the ups and downs of weather,” Kimbell said.
“There’s no easy explanation for it, it’s just a really wet year.”
Ottawa Hydro crews were busy getting the lights back on with several outages scattered across the city.
Across the river in Gatineau, some washouts and localised flooding forced evacuations in some neighbourhoods.
MRC des Collines Police tweeted photos of more serious washouts in the Val des Monts and La Peche regions, where some residents were cut off due to washed-out roads.
