Planning Committee approves Salvation Army’s proposal

OTTAWA – The Salvation Army’s proposal for a shelter in Vanier is one step closer to reality.
Postmedia reports after three long days of hearing public feedback on the plan, the city’s planning committee gave their approval Friday, in a 6-3 vote in favor of the new shelter.
This step, however, is far from the end of the conversations on what’s been a very controversial proposal.
The plan will now go before council, meantime threats of appealing to the Ontario Municipal Board continue from one group opposed to the site, SOS Vanier.
Committee heard from over 150 residents over the three meetings, many of which strongly opposed to the plan.
The most common point of view was that the shelter would damage the community along Montreal Road, which already faces many of its own challenges.
