No joke, beer prices went up April 1st

By OttawaMatters Staff

Beer Canada is asking Canadians to sign their petition in hopes the federal government will scrap its’ escalator tax.

It was introduced in the 2017 budget.

Taxes increased on beer by about two per cent on Sunday and will continue to increase on an annual basis. It is being done to match inflation.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau put it in place after there was no increase in Canada for 30 years.

Beer Canada says taxes on a bottle of beer are already 47 per cent.

“…With this escalator tax, going up automatically, they’ll take another 10 and a half million dollars out of the pockets of hardworking Canadians.” said Luke Harford, president of Beer Canada.

Thousands have already signed the petition.
