The count down to Canada Day celebrations in the nation's capital is on.
Elijah Woods and Jamie Fine performed their hit, “Ain't Easy,” at a news conference Wednesday, while Minister of Canadian Heritage Melanie Joly explained what can be expected at this year's Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa.
“What we'll be doing is making sure there is a maximum wait time of an hour [to get onto Parliament Hill],” she explained after a barrage of questions from media, regarding long wait times experienced at last year's Canada 150 celebration. “We'll have signage, we'll have social media information and we will have volunteers and entertainers to make sure that everyone is having a good time.”
Joly said food stands and water stations will be available on Parliament Hill this year to reduce the need for people to carry bags to the celebrations. The hope is that less people bringing bags will also help to speed up the security process.
Meanwhile, Assistant Deputy Minister of Sport, Major Events & Commemorations with Canadian Heritage Andrew Campbell told The Rick Gibbons Show there are a few themes which will be present at this year's Canada Day celebration: The 100th anniversary of women being able to vote in Canada, reconciliation with Canada's Indigenous population, and overall inclusion and acceptance.
The Snowbirds will make an appearance at this year's celebration, and of course bands will be playing on Parliament Hill throughout the day. Headlining acts Lights and Arkells will cap off the night.
