REMINDER: Hwy 417 closure planned for this weekend, detours in place

By Jenn Pritchard

Hwy 417 could be a bit of a nightmare this weekend as city crews work to remove the Harmer Avenue pedestrian bridge that crosses the highway.

The bridge removal marks the start of a two-year project that includes detours and traffic tie ups across the Parkdale/Holland area.

Starting Saturday at 5 p.m., Hwy 417 on and off ramps will be closed at Bronson Avenue, Rochester Street, O'Connor Street and Parkdale Avenue.

The highway will then shut down between Bronson Avenue and Carling Avenue.

Traffic will be diverted off the Queensway and sent along the posted detour.

City of Ottawa Manager of Traffic Operations, Chris Brinkmann explained that the detour would be visible.

“We will have signed detour routes in place. Our traffic control centre will be open and fully staffed,” he explained. “In addition, police will be assisting and helping us direct traffic.”

If all goes according to plan, the Queensway will reopen to traffic on Sunday at 11 a.m.
