A zero-tolerance policy on cannabis use for Gatineau emergency workers

By Glennis Lane

With less than a week to go before recreational cannabis becomes legal in the county, Gatineau has outlined its policy for use by city staff.

The city's “high-risk” employees such as police and firefighters will have a zero-tolerance policy to follow with no trace of cannabis in their system.

The city says this doesn't mean the workers can never consume pot but it does means none can be in their system after a vacation for example.

This policy expands the current rules around alcohol.

The restrictions in Gatineau are in line with the former Liberal government's rules and also ban people from smoking in public areas where there could be minors.

The newly elected Coalition Avenir Quebec has said it will tighten rules around cannabis consumption and also raise the legal age from 18 to 21.
