Head of Barrhaven’s St. Benedict School named one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals

The Learning Partnership has recognized Ottawa Catholic School Board principal Lynne Charette as one of Canada's Outstanding Principals for 2019 — a distinction she shares with 30 exceptional educators from every province and territory in the country.

Charette is the principal at St. Benedict School in Barrhaven.

She began her career as a teacher with the OCSB in 1984. During her 35 years with the board, she has served as a classroom teacher, resource teacher, system special education consultant, vice-principal, and principal.

It's been two years since Charette was chosen to help open the OCSB's new elementary school, St. Benedict.

The school board says Charette's willingness to collaborate with her colleagues and share her ideas regarding change management and transformational practices set her apart as a leader among leaders.

“Within all of her roles, Lynne has been a strong, skilled leader who has a tremendous impact on our school communities,” said Denise Andre, Director of Education, OCSB. “She leads by example, demonstrating a willingness to learn, take risks and try new things. She is open to opportunities to explore new pedagogies, as long as they are solidly grounded in research, and are known to improve teaching and increase student achievement.”

The Learning Partnership's Canada's Outstanding Principals program recognizes the unique and vital contributions of principals in publicly funded schools.

The 30 principals, nominated by parents, colleagues and community members, and chosen by a national selection committee, are being celebrated for demonstrating innovation, leadership and for employing creativity in finding solutions and opportunities within their school communities. They will be recognized for their accomplishments at the annual Canada's Outstanding Principals awards gala reception on February 26, 2019 in Toronto.
