Five arrested in downtown Ottawa mugging

Ottawa police are laying charges against five young men, believed to have robbed someone in a downtown area park.

Officials say a man was approached by a group of men at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while walking through the park. One of the suspects was carrying a small axe as the group demanded the victim's money. 

The lone man handed over his wallet, which held money, identity cards and credit cards, and the suspects left the park. 

No one was hurt in the incident.

Responding police officers were given a description of the suspects and were shown the direction which they travelled.

During the attempts in finding the culprits, the victim contacted his bank to cancel the cards. The bank informed him that one of the cards was being used at a fast food restaurant on Rideau Street. 

The officers were informed and located the suspects. Five individuals were arrested. One of the suspects resisted the arrest and spat on the officers. 

Nicholas C. Mills, 22 years old of Ottawa, is charged with:

  • Breach of probation

Joel Sarault, 21, of Ottawa, is charged with:

  • Assaulting Police
  • Uttering threats
  • Breach of probation (2 counts)

Both Mills and Sarault are jointly charged with:

  • Robbery with an offensive weapon
  • Weapons dangerous
  • Conspiracy
  • Fraudulent use of credit card

Three youths (14, 15 and 15 years old) have been charged with:

  • Disguise with intent
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Robbery with an offensive weapon
  • Weapons dangerous
  • Conspiracy
  • Fraudulent use of credit card

Four of the accused were expected in court Thursday. They other has a court date set on May 14.
