Nepean police chase ends in arrest and charges

By Mike Vlasveld

A 34-year-old Ottawa man is facing six charges after police were sent on a chase between Prince of Wales Drive and Merivale Road in Nepean, just south of Hunt Club Road.

Ottawa police tactical officers came upon an unoccupied stolen vehicle on Prince of Wales Drive, Tuesday around 10:15 a.m.

A suspect soon returned to the vehicle and began to drive away as officers approached him. The officers followed the suspect and requested assistance.

When an officer attempted, again, to stop the erratic vehicle, the driver did not stop. The suspect turned the stolen vehicle onto Auriga Drive and the officer ended the pursuit for safety reasons. But not long after the officer had ended it, the suspect crashed into a ditch and took off on foot in the McFarlane Road area. Officers saw him going into a backyard.

More OPS officers responded to the area to set up a perimeter.

The K9 Unit was also called in and found the suspect in a backyard under a tarp. He was arrested at the scene.

As a result of a follow-up investigation, Robert Winstone was charged with:

  • Possess property or thing obtained by crime/exceeding $5,000
  • Dangerous operation
  • Flight from peace officer
  • Possess/use credit card obtained by offence (2 counts)
  • Breach of probation

He is scheduled to appear in court on April 24.
