‘Ghost bike’ installed at Ottawa City Hall

By Victoria Williston

A so-called ghost bike was placed at the Marion Dewar Plaza at City Hall on Monday night, to honour the cyclist killed on May 16 on Laurier Avenue.

Councillor Catherine McKenney tweeted a photo of the memorial at City Hall that said the ghost bike would stay in place until “we take real action to keep our most vulnerable road users safe”.

Last Thursday morning, a man in his 50's, who has yet to be identified, was killed after being struck by a vehicle while cycling at Elgin Street and Laurier Avenue.

Police told 1310 NEWS, the vehicle did not stop after the collision and was found abandoned a short distance away on the Mackenzie King Bridge.

The Ottawa Police Service is continuing to search for the driver of the vehicle believed to be involved.

City councillors, Jeff Leiper and Shawn Menard organized a rally at City Hall last Thursday to demand that cycling infrastructure be properly prioritized.

On Wednesday, a group ride is being organized at the southwest corner of Nicholas Street and Laurier Avenue at 7:45 a.m. The group will be riding to City Hall to demand that the council implement Vision Zero and commit to safer roads for cyclists.

Vision Zero is a multi-national road traffic safety project that hopes to prevent fatalities or serious injuries involving road traffic.
