Hintonburg Escape Manor to be used to boost recruitment for Communications Security Establishment

By Jeff Slack

The Communications Security Establishment(CSE) is taking a unique approach in trying to boost recruitment numbers by partnering with the Escape Manor in Ottawa's Hintonburg Neighbourhood to create an escape room.

The CSE is a cryptologic agency that is responsible for cyber security and foreign signal intelligence.

The organization is working to create an escape room that can mimic scenarios related to cyber breaches.

“New recruits to CSE come in and they are immediately faced with a cyber breach they have to solve,” said Christine Menard, Acting Director of Marketing for CSE. “The same kind of skills and creativity and innovation that you would use to solve your way through an escape room is the same kind of skills that we are looking for in the CSE.”

The idea is a way for the CSE to promote the work it does after finding out residents weren't aware the organization existed.

“We conducted a national survey in 2017, and we found out that only three per cent of Canadians have actually heard of the Communications Security Establishment,” said Menard.

Code breakers have a chance to crack the code this September. If you are able to finish the escape room with extra time left, Menard says you will be awarded with an additional puzzle that, if solved, could land you with an interview with a CSE recruiter.
