New pot shop to open on Strandherd Drive in Barrhaven

By Mike Vlasveld

The capital region will see another pot shop opening its doors — this time in Barrhaven.

On Wednesday, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) released the results of the cannabis retail store lottery draw it held on August 20. The lottery provided those who met pre-qualification requirements for one of the 42 new store authorizations announced by the Government of Ontario on July 3, an opportunity to be selected to apply for one.

The AGCO says 4,864 eligible expressions of interest were included in the draw, which was overseen by a third-party fairness monitor.

Ethan Stark was the winning local applicant, who is looking to open a cannabis store at 4335 Strandherd Drive, in units 3, 4 and 5. That's in a plaza just east of Highway 416.

Selected applicants have until August 28 to apply for a cannabis Retail Operator Licence and a Retail Store Authorization. The AGCO will then undertake its full eligibility and licensing review.

Aquanta Group Inc. was another local group which had applied, looking to put a pot shop in Orleans, but was not selected in this draw.

The AGCO says it will only licence applicants and authorize stores that meet all legal and regulatory requirements.
