Citizen Transit Commissioner frustrated with lack of communication from OC Transpo on LRT delays

Ottawa's Citizen Transit Commissioner is worried about a lack of communication between OC Transpo and the people using its new light rail system.

Service was delayed along the Confederation Line Thursday afternoon, due to a technical issue with the train.

Sarah Wright-Gilbert was on the trains at that time, and expressed her frustration through a series of tweets that OC Transpo had not been updating riders about the delays.

In a further interview with 1310 NEWS, she elaborated.

“It took OC Transpo over an hour to communicate anything about the delays through their OC Transpo twitter account,” explained Wright-Gilbert.

She said it's disappointing for someone stuck on the trains, but also for someone leaving work and checking their phone to see if there are any delays to expect.

“[It's also disappointing] to the folks who are in the station, looking up at the trackboard, saying I have to wait a half an hour for my train, but I have to get home to my kids.”

Wright-Gilbert added that if the delays continue to be poorly communicated, the public trust in the system will begin to erode.

The Citizen Transit Commissioner said she will be raising her concerns at the next City of Ottawa Transit Commission meeting.
