Out with the old and in with the new: Ottawa sign being replaced

By Jenn Pritchard

This will be your last week to snap a photo with the iconic OTTAWA sign in the ByWard Market, as the city plans on replacing it before the end of the year.

The large block lettered sign was unveiled as part of Canada's 150th anniversary and the Ottawa 2017 celebrations.

After being the backdrop for hundreds of thousands of photos, it has reached the end of its lifecycle.

The area around the York Street Plaza will be closed off starting on Monday, November 18, as crews work to remove the old sign and get the area ready for the installation of a new OTTAWA sign.

The new sign is being made from a combination of materials that will help it weather the seasons here in the capital and last a lot longer than the original sign.

It will also include an enhanced internal lighting system that will see the letters light up differently throughout the year to reflect the season and different celebrations.

The city is also launching a program where you can request special sign lighting.

More information about the sign lighting program will be released once the new OTTAWA sign is installed. No exact date has been given by the city for when the new sign will be completed.
