The large “OTTAWA” sign in the ByWard Market will start coming down, as the site is prepared for a new, more durable tourist photo backdrop.
The original sign was unveiled for Canada's 150th anniversary. Three years of sun, rain and snow have aged the sign to the point that it needs to be replaced.
Workers will begin dismantling the sign, Monday. Work will then be done to prepare the site for a new, permanent “OTTAWA” sign.
The city says that the new sign will be the same size as the old one, but that the replacement has been designed to be more durable. The new sign will also feature an enhanced internal lighting system, allowing the letters to shine in a variety of colours.
The perimeter of the York Street plaza will be temporarily fenced off while the work is under way.
