The Sarnia Lambton Court House says its phone lines are being tied up by people calling about a warrant that supposedly exists for their arrest.
The Sarnia Police Service says some of the calls are local, but the majority are coming from the Ottawa area.
The scam calls, which are leading to people calling the courthouse, make reference to either taxes not being paid or that resident's SIN being used in a crime.
Police say the phone number being left by the scam caller is 519-333-2950, which is the general phone number to the Sarnia Lambton Court House. Officers are asking that anyone who recieves the scam call, please not call that number, as it is tying up the phone lines at the court house.
Police want to remind residents that no agency in Canada will call and threaten to make an arrest over the phone. Also, if anyone is ever asking for payments in bitcoin or gift cards, rest assured, it is a scam.
The best thing to do when recieving a scam call is just hang up. These criminals are requesting personal information, such as your SIN, and in turn will use it to create fraudulent documents such as credit cards.
