Ten Thousand Villages will be closing in a few months.
In a release, the company said, “It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the closure of the corporate operations of Ten Thousand Villages Canada.”
Its Ottawa store will be closing, along with 13 others across the country, as well as their head office and distribution centre, plus the Ten Thousand Villages Canada webstore.
The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) said despite their best efforts, they were unable to achieve the level of sales that would continue to provide them with the ability to operate a sustainable business model.
Ten Thousand Villages has been in operation for 74 years and in that time, the MCC said they have empowered over 100,000 makers in developing countries around the world earn a fair and stable income.
There is no set date for when the Ottawa store will close.
A selection of Canadian stores, operated by separate boards, will remain open.
