City of Ottawa forced to temporarily close one of three emergency child care centres

By Mike Vlasveld

One of three provincially-funded child care centres in Ottawa, which is helping essential and critical service workers, is temporarily closing after a staff member was tested for COVID-19.

A staff member at the Esther By Child Care Centre reported feeling unwell on Tuesday, and at the suggestion of Ottawa Public Health (OPH), was then tested for COVID-19. It is anticipated that the results of the test will take between 24 and 48 hours to be received.

The city says, “As the highest level of safety for child care workers and children/families in emergency care remains our priority and in consultation with Ottawa Public Health (OPH), the decision has been made to temporarily close the facility immediately until the staff member’s test results have been received.”

This temporary closure impacts four families. Communication has been provided to families and employees at the centre.

The Centre Educatif Tournesol and Dr. Ernest Couture Child Care Centre continue to run without any issue.
