A local advocate is selling lawn signs in support of Black Lives Matters, while also aiming to spread education on racial issues and raise money for Black Canadians.
Genevieve Choquette, founder of the GC Experience, a network for women to share travel and health journeys, created double-sided lawn signs that shares the message, “We Stand Together”
Choquette believes creating the signs was the right thing to do to support Black Lives Matter, while bringing attention to racial issues.
“Right now, our community is hurting and our Black community is speaking and they're telling us that they're not okay,” Choquette explains. “We as a community have a social obligation as a community, I think, to educate ourselves on the issue and support one another in these times,”
She adds that systematic racism also exists in Canada and her children have fallen victim to it before. Choquette explains that it is possible to change and unlearn problematic behaviours and beliefs, even if it is difficult or uncomfortable to address.
The lawn sign is available for $10 online. All proceeds will be going to support the Federation of Black Canadians.
The Federation of Black Canadians is an organization that helps to advance the social, economic, political and cultural interests of Canadians of African descent.
