Calabogie power dam to be rebuilt after damage done in 2018 tornado

Work has begun to rebuild one of Ontario's oldest hydro dams, on the Madawaska River.

The Calabogie Generating Station was constructed in 1917, and was extensively damaged by a tornado in 2018. The new facility will replace the original, century-old powerhouse with a new powerhouse that will double its capacity from 5 to 10 megawatts.

“We're excited to rebuild one of our oldest generating stations, especially during these unprecedented times,” Mike Martelli, president of renewable generation, Ontario Power Generation (OPG), wrote in a news release.

He added that other options were considered, including retrofitting the existing powerhouse, but that a complete redevelopment was determined to be the best option.

OPG is spending more than $100-million to redevelop the dam.

SNC-Lavalin and M. Sullivan & Son Ltd. were awarded the design-build contract.
