No more free disposable masks at OC Transpo stations as of July 31

The City of Ottawa is getting ready to cut off its supply of free disposable face masks to transit riders.

It started handing out masks to anyone that needed one when new rules passed in June, asking that all transit riders wear one. The city says that initiative was only supposed to last for a week, but its supply of masks allowed it to continue for much longer.

“Most customers now have their own masks and have become accustomed to wearing them when taking transit,” reads a memo from the City of Ottawa, Friday. “Masks are available in the community at many retail locations, through the Human Needs Taskforce, and the United Way had masks available for sale at many of our busier stations last week.”

As a result of all of those factors, the city says July 31 will be the last day that free disposable masks will be available at O-Train and Transitway stations.

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has a list of mask vendors available on ottawapublichealth.ca. If customers are unable to purchase their own masks, they can call 3-1-1 or email the Human Needs Task Force at HNTF@ottawa.ca to find out how to get one.
