Ottawa Athletic Club closing due to pandemic challenges

By Mike Vlasveld

The Ottawa Athletic Club (OAC) isn't going to make it to its 45th anniversary, as it's announced its closure.

In a Tweeted letter, Founder Sol Shabinsky says COVID-19 has affected many businesses which rely on the congregation of people in close proximity, and “regrettably the OAC is not immune to those challenges.”

The sport and fitness club on Lancaster Road, which has been serving Ottawa since 1976, is winding down operations this week before officially closing its doors on Friday, September 11.

“To the many thousands of members, past and present, who have made the OAC an integral part of their daily lives, thank you for your loyal patronage,” says Shabinsky.

Current OAC members who have prepaid for memberships or services are expected to be fully refunded.
