With the help of multiple police forces – including OPP, York, Peel and Durham – Toronto police have provided details on a historic, province-wide investigation that could lead to over 114 people facing around 800 charges.
Known as ‘Project Sunder‘, Toronto police say the year-long operation targeted over 100 suspects – including members of the ‘Eglinton West Crips’ – alleged to be responsible for murder, attempted murder, firearms offences, drug trafficking and human trafficking in areas spanning from Toronto to Ottawa to Thunder Bay.
Investigators say it’s anticipated over 100 people “will face approximately 800 charges”, including offences related to participating in a criminal organization, multiple firearm and drug-trafficking offences.
“Members of the Eglinton West Crips and their associates were allegedly involved in numerous violent incidents and activities that have plagued our community over the last three years,” investigators said at a press conference on Thursday.
Over several months, police say officers seized over 31 firearms including four over-capacity magazines, 7 kilograms of cocaine, 2 kilograms of fentanyl, and over $300,000 in Canadian currency.
“Project Sunder represents an important piece to an effective police strategy to reduce violence and injury in our communities,” Deputy Chief, Nick Milinovich of Peel Police said.
“Gun, gang, and drug activities carry rippling consequences for our communities without consideration to jurisdictional boundaries. The violence it produces is becoming far too common…
“The outcome of Project Sunder is a demonstration of the value of that collaboration.”
Toronto police thanked its fellow officers for their help in the investigation.
