Ottawa Crime Stoppers sees jump in anonymous tips submitted during 2020

By Alex Goudge

Despite the pandemic affecting its ability to hold community outreach events, the local Crime Stoppers branch says it saw a boost in anonymous tips submitted in 2020, compared to the previous year.

According to National Capital Area Crime Stoppers president Richard McMullen, 4,907 anonymous tips were submitted last year, compared to 3,733 tips placed in 2019.

He adds, there is an incentive for people to submit tips to Crime Stoppers, such as the ability to come forward without identifying yourself, or without the fear of reprisal, along with a reward of up to $2,000 if information leads to an arrest.

To date, tips submitted to Ottawa's Crime Stoppers has led to over 5,000 arrests and the closure of over 5,000 cases.
