NCC closing Queen Elizabeth Driveway on weekends starting next week

By Dani-Elle Dubé

It’s that time, as Ottawa moves closer to spring, when the NCC closes the Queen Elizabeth Driveway for residents to use worry free of traffic that can clog the roadway.

But this year, the roadway will be opening to users earlier than usual.

As of Tuesday, the driveway from Fifth Avenue to Somerset Street will be open to active users only on weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Until further notice, however, the parkway will reopen to motor vehicle traffic on weekdays.

Since January 23, the project has given residents living in the densest part of the city the opportunity to get active outdoors while practising safe physical distancing during the province’s stay-at-home order.

In the event of heavy snowfall, the project could be temporarily interrupted, the NCC says. It will inform the public as soon as possible via social media channels.
