Handgun seized by Ottawa police during Carlington traffic stop

A 27-year-old Ottawa man is facing a number of weapon-related offences after a traffic stop on Shillington Avenue in Carlington.

A vehicle was stopped around 10:35 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, and the officer conducting the stop noticed a strong odour of marijuana. Police say a large bag of pot was found in the vehicle, along with a handgun.

Devontae Franklin, 27, of Ottawa, has been charged with: 

  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm without holding a licence
  • Possession of prohibited firearm knowing he did not have a licence
  • Possession of prohibited firearm in a vehicle
  • Possession of an unloaded prohibited firearm
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm obtained by crime
  • Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (five counts)

He will appear in court Thursday, April 1.
