Gatineau mayor pleased federal budget pushes inter-provincial tramway another step forward

By Chris Kurys

The inter-provincial tramway between Ottawa and Gatineau has taken a massive step forward, and the mayor of Gatineau is pleased.

The federal budget, tabled Monday, April 19, saw the creation of a new office at the National Capital Commission with one specific purpose: analyze the specifics of a tramway between the two cities.

“The huge challenge of this project is that too many departments at the federal government are concerned,” said Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin.

He explained that the creation of a singular office will allow the federal government to speak in one unified voice.

A City of Gatineau plan would see a rail line run over the Portage Bridge into downtown Ottawa, connecting the Societé de transport de l’Outaouais and OC Transpo by a line on Wellington Street, or by a tunnel under Sparks Street.

“I think it's the first time that we have a really clear sign that the federal government will eventually say yes to this project, and it couldn't be clearer than with this budget.” said Pedneaud-Jobin.
