The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has requested an Amber Alert for an 11-month-old baby girl, whom they allege has been abducted.

Information released from both OPS and Ontario Provincial Police has contradicted each other all through the morning hours. Initially, OPS said the suspect is a 70-year-old woman named Miriam. In the latest release from police, they do not identify her as a suspect, only as a possible witness.

Ottawa police told CityNews Ottawa around 6:30 a.m. Friday morning that Miriam is the suspect and the girl is believed to be with her, but that their earlier statement that Miriam is the girl's grandmother was incorrect.

Police also originally stated that the victim, Abby Mathewsie, and the suspect were last seen travelling from Carling Avenue and Pinecrest Road at 1:55 a.m. Friday, June 4, but have now changed that information to say Mathewsie was last seen Thursday, June 3 at 11:12 p.m. with her mother.

The 11-month-old is described as:

  • Indigenous
  • 2 feet tall
  • 20 lbs.
  • brown eyes
  • black hair

She was last seen wearing a Navy Blue 'onesie' with black pants and white or pink socks. Mathewsie has a feeding tube in her stomach and must be fed through the feeding tube. Police say she cannot be fed regular baby formula and needs medical attention.

The witness is described as:

  • White
  • 5'6″
  • 130 lbs.
  • Grey hair

Police are asking anyone who can identify this woman to call police immediately.

The OPS Emergency Services Unit has been conducting a ground search of the area since early Friday morning. There is a large police presence in the area. The Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit is also investigating.

Investigators are asking nearby residents to search their properties and report anything suspicious.

Anyone with information or who spots the pair is asked to contact 911 immediately. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or at crimestoppers.ca.
