Giant boulder dating back to last ice age finds new home in Old Ottawa South

By Alex Black

A 16-tonne boulder unearthed in Old Ottawa South has found a new home in the neighbourhood.

The giant boulder was dug up by construction crews replacing water mains on Bellwood Avenue this past May.

It was going to be broken up and hauled off with the other construction debris, but neighbours petitioned the city, arguing that, since the boulder dated back to the last ice age, it had historical and educational significance.

Capital Ward City Councillor Shawn Menard has confirmed the 'Bellwood Boulder' will now reside in Windsor Park, just behind the OC Transpo bus stop.

Menard says the boulder can now be enjoyed by residents for decades to come.
