Immersive Van Gogh art exhibit opens at Ottawa’s Aberdeen Pavillion

The immersive Beyond Van Gogh exhibit is now open at Ottawa's Aberdeen Pavilion.

The experience is said to bring the artist's work to life, using audiovisual projection.

Mathieu St. Arnaud of Normal Studios, one of the companies involved with the exhibit, tells CityNews Ottawa that they convey more than just Van Gogh's artwork.

“I was reading letters between him and his brothers, he and his brother Theo, and I wanted to make it something more personal – like, what I was reading,” explains St. Arnaud. “So, we started [thinking about] going beyond Van Gogh and meeting Vincent, going beyond the image, beyond the myth and going beyond the frame and entering the painting.'”

St. Arnaud thinks there's a reason Van Gogh's work resonates with so many people.

“Painting, for him, was a healing process. Whatever life threw at him, he would paint more colours and he would paint in more colours again. And that's a way that he felt happy and he saw beauty all around him. And this, I believe, is one of the reasons why we still connect with his work today, is that we feel this emotion.”

Beyond Van Gogh runs 7 days a week until September 16.

The walk-through exhibit takes about one hour to complete.
