More notice expected from City of Ottawa when issuing winter parking bans

By Alex Goudge

The City of Ottawa will now give residents more notice when winter parking bans go into effect.

City officials will now announce a night-time parking ban by 9 a.m. the morning of, and if the ban remains in place the following day an announcement will be made by 3:30 p.m.

When night-time parking ban is issued it remains in effect from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m., while a day-time ban is in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In previous years, parking bans were issued any time before 7 p.m., leaving Ottawans little time to find alternative parking.

Director of Roads and Parking Services in Ottawa Alain Gonthier is also encouraging residents to sign up for e-mail notifications.

“Whenever there is a parking ban, they will basically get an automatic e-mail pushed to them, so they don't have to go searching — it's going to come to them,” Gonthier told CityNews Ottawa.

Residents can sign up for the e-mail notifications, check the status of winter parking bans, and find alternative parking on the City of Ottawa's website.

Winter parking bans are put into effect whenever significant snowfall is anticipated in Ottawa.
