City of Ottawa confirms positive COVID-19 tests at child care centre, physical distancing centre

By Mike Vlasveld

The City of Ottawa says a child at Borden Farm Child Care Centre and a client at the Dempsey Physical Distancing Centre have tested positive for COVID-19.

The child’s last day at the centre was on December 15 and Children’s Services received a positive test result on December 20.

In consultation with Ottawa Public Health (OPH), Children’s Services is closing the preschool and toddler programs at Borden Farm Child Care Centre for at least 10 days, starting on December 21.

The city says Children’s Services has not identified further COVID-19 transmission within the centre so far. Communications have been provided to staff and family members.

The individual who tested positive after staying at the physical distancing centre last stayed there on December 16 and has been referred to self-isolate at the Routhier Isolation Centre.

The Dempsey Physical Distancing Centre will continue to accept referrals.

The city's Human Needs Task Force is working with Ottawa Inner City Health and OPH to support contact tracing and will conduct additional surveillance testing as directed.

In order to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread at the Dempsey centre, the following preventative measures continue to be implemented:

  • Everyone onsite is required to wear masks at all times.
  • Ensuring all individuals working at the Centres are wearing medical grade masks and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) (properly fitted mask and eye protection) when required and practicing frequent hand hygiene
  • Staff will continue to remind and reinforce with clients the need to physically distance through cueing, ensuring posters provided by Ottawa Public Health remain visible
  • Disinfecting all work areas and implementing further enhanced cleaning for the entire facility to ensure the health and safety of staff and residents
