Rapid COVID-19 testing kits arrive at Barrhaven rec complex

By Mike Vlasveld

The City of Ottawa says it's able to distribute 1,000 rapid antigen testing kits at the Barrhaven Minto Recreation Complex on Wednesday after all.

After an announcement from the province that the kits would be available at the complex starting Tuesday morning, residents lined up as early as 4 a.m., in anticipation of free rapid COVID-19 tests becoming available at 7 a.m. But 1,000 vouchers were given out instead, as the kits were late to arrive.

Tuesday evening, the city asked that residents wait for its word before lining up for the rapid testing kits on Wednesday, December 22, due to delivery delays.

Residents still lined up in the early morning hours, however, in hopes of getting a free kit.

The City of Ottawa tweeted, just before 10 a.m., Wednesday, that 1,000 kits had arrived in the city and would be delivered to the Minto rec complex to be handed out at 11 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.

The city had originally reported that more testing kits would be available on Thursday and Friday as well, but it's urging residents to keep an eye on its social media channel for word on future shipments.
