Ukrainian Canadian Congress preparing to welcome refugees

Following the rally of nearly two hundred people that mobilized across the city over the weekend, a few organizations are taking it amongst themselves to
provide as much aid as possible to the people of Ukraine.
Cassian Soltykevych from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress says the organization along with others in the city are ready to welcome Ukrainians refugees into the city. One thing they are willing to do is collect names and further information of those who are seeking refuge in the country or the city.
“There are local communities who are organizing all of this and are starting to collect names and numbers [where] people can reach out to once we come to that point,” he explained to The Sam Laprade Show on Monday, February 28.
“We're not there yet, but do feel free to share your names with organizers of these rallies and many of them will be collecting that information for when that time comes when we do have planes coming with these refugees from Ukraine.”
Although he's not sure exactly how many refugees could make their way over into country, he does anticipate millions wanting to seek refuge over the next few months.
He adds that he has been speaking with ministers over the course of the past few weeks to discuss the safety of Ukrainian families fleeing the war-stricken country.
“It's really about getting all the women and children who can leave safely Ukraine and make it to the border of Romania or Hungary or Poland to make it across the border,” he said. “And once they're in Europe or the EU rather, then we can [work] on trying to get them to Canada as well, so that process is happening there and it's going to unfold over the next few days here.”
Even on an international level, he's heard from residents who are willing to help in any way that they can.
Soltykevych adds that there are ways that people can help the people of Ukraine, where they can donate to the Canada Ukrainian Foundation. He says
residents can also contact their local MPs in order to pressure the government to continue providing aid to Ukrainians.
