Ottawa fire crews knock down commercial fire on Laurier Avenue

By Alex Black

There are no injuries reported after a commercial fire in Ottawa's downtown core.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to a fire on Laurier Avenue, between Elgin and Metcalfe streets around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.

Photos from CityNews Ottawa reporter Cormac MacSweeney show a heavy OFS presence outside the Orient House Restaurant at 150 Laurier Ave.

The fire started on the first floor in a commercial kitchen, where crews say it was contained before it spread to the rest of the building. OFS says the fire did spread into the ceiling tiles near the point of origin, so crews had to pull down parts of the ceiling to gain access to the fire and extinguish it.

Firefighters did two extensive searches through heavy smoke conditions and no occupants were found inside the building.

A fire investigator has been dispatched to the scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
