Gatineau River water level stable as warm temperatures, rain expected this weekend

The City of Gatineau says water levels at the Gatineau River are stable and below normal as snow begins to melt this spring.

The city says it is monitoring the water levels closely into the weekend – with a high of five degrees C and rain expected on Saturday, March 19 and a high of nine degrees C on Sunday, March 20.

Part of the Rideau River is on flood watch, according to the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority.

“Residents in flood-prone or low-lying areas that are historically susceptible to flooding should take the necessary precautions to protect their property,” said the RVCA.

Meanwhile the Ottawa River flood status is considered at a stable level.

In a release issued Saturday, Gatineau says dam managers are overseeing basins and reservoirs and there are no issues to report.

“With spring just around the corner, and since the 2017 flooding, Gatineau has been on alert, and our crews are well equipped,” said Gatineau Mayor France Bélisle. “At this point, even though the snow is melting, the spring freshet has not yet officially started.

“The latest data indicate no cause for concern with water levels. Municipal services are at the ready, and mechanisms are in place to anticipate and quickly respond, if necessary.”

The City of Gatineau says it has 27,500 filled sandbags ready to go, if needed. Another 200,000 empty sandbags are available to be filled.
