Students within the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) are leading fundraising events to raise money for a charity that works with Indigenous communities to help address food security and food sovereignty.
UCDSB Student Senators are assisting Green Iglu with several initiatives running from April 1 until May 1.
“This year’s Student Senate has made it evident that they wish to leave the world a better place than they found it,” said Eshal Ali, student trustee and student vice chair. “We recognize the challenges Indigenous communities continuously face and have faced, especially over the past year, and with our combined resources we aim to help them form a future in which they know they are always supported.”
The students have set a goal of $5,000, and Bradford Ward, student trustee and chair of the Student Senate has committed to taking a pie in the face should participating schools reach the per school minimum of $227.
Ron Ferguson, director of education with the UCDSB, is donating $10 to each school taking part in the initiative.
“Coordinating a board-wide fundraising initiative at the secondary level takes commitment, organization and teamwork,” said Ferguson. “This group of students are true leaders and I am proud that they’ve taken on this initiative.”
