A City of Ottawa committee has approved a strategy to allow for mandatory organic waste diversion at multi-residential properties.
So far, the City's Green Bin program is in place at only 929 of the 2,150 multi-residential properties where waste is collected in the city. Multi-residential properties include apartment buildings, condos, and townhouses.
This new strategy approved by the City's standing committee on environmental protection, water and waste management, would divert way more organic waste away from the Trail Road landfill.
The Standing Committee on Environmental Protection, Water and Waste Management met this morning.

Along with the new mandatory program, the City plans to increase education and promotion so that individuals at these multi-residential properties can integrate best practices.
This is one of several City projects designed to support the City's new solid waste master plan, to be completed in 2023.
This strategy is set to be discussed by council on Wednesday, April 27.
