Area councillor amazed by community support after fire damages residential building

An Ottawa city councillor is amazed to see a community come together after a fire ravaged through a residential co-op building in Ottawa's east end last week, as 12 units became unlivable and forcing its occupants to find shelter elsewhere for the forseeable future.

On April 28, Ottawa area firefighters responded to 911 calls at approximately 8:40 p.m. reporting a fire in a four-storey building on Ogilvie Road, between Palmerston Drive and Cadboro Road. No one was injuried, and several pets were rescued from the building including a dog who was returned to its owner.

“It's a tight knit community,” said Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Tim Tierney on The Sam Laprade Show on Monday, May 2, 2022. “It's devastating what happened, and the fire services reacted quickly.”

Coun. Tierney hosted a fundraiser on Sunday, May 1 for the residents of the building that is operated by Better Living Residential Co-Operative Incorporated. The east end councillor said hundreds of people came out in support of the fundraiser, and raised over $22,000 in gift cards, monetary donations and restaurant gift cards. People also donated toiletries, clothes, phone chargers and other items to support the people displaced by the fire.

“I couldn't believe it, the outpouring of support was unbelievable,” added Coun. Tierney. “I am really proud of this community after coming together like this.”
