Bra hanging rally at Ben Franklin Place brings harassment in politics to forefront

By Alex Goudge

A rally is being held outside Ben Franklin Place on Thursday, May 5, for a ceremonial “bra hanging,” in an effort to raise awareness of the need for accountability of elected officials, as well as women's safety in politics.

Organizers of the rally are also encouraging people across Ontario to follow suit and hang bras outside their local municipal buildings.

According to Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women executive director Erin Leigh, the bra hanging is significant since it references when College Ward Coun. Rick Chiarelli reportedly asked employees or interview candidates to go “bra-less.”

Former Chiarelli employee Stephanie Dobbs is among those taking part in the rally, who is grateful to be included this time around.

“Back when this all started I wasn't public,” Dobbs told The Sam Laprade Show with guest host Derick Fage on Wednesday, May 4. “After I spoke to the integrity commissioner, I decided to not come forward until the report was finalized because I wanted to protect the integrity of the report.”

Dobbs adds there is a sense of inequality, as she feels there are more severe penalties for financial-related issues, compared to mistreating a human being.

With provincial and municipal elections on the horizon, Dobbs is hopeful candidates will take on this issue.

“It's very upsetting that our community leaders are not held to a higher standard or at least the same standard, that in any other area you would lose your job for this,” she explained.

The rally at Ben Franklin Place is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Thursday, May 5.
