Ottawa Redblacks kick off new CFL season

By Anil Jhalli

The Ottawa Redblacks kick off their 2022 Canadian Football League (CFL) season on Friday, June 10 with a road matchup against the two time defending Grey Cup champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

It will be a tough test for the new look Redblacks team, who are coming off two consecutive regular seasons with a combine win total of six games.

The Redblacks were near the bottom of the CFL in every offensive category last season, but Chris Hofley, the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group's communications manager told The Sam Laprade Show with guest host Derick Fage on Wednesday, June 8 that the organization has made a lot of changes, including bringing in a new general manager in Shawn Burke, who brought in a veteran quarterback in Jeremiah Masoli.

“Football in general is such a quarterback driven game and everything begins and ends with the guy throwing the ball,” said Hofley.

Hofley noted that the team brought in some reinforcements on the offensive line that gave up 52 sacks last season. But the defensive side of the ball should once again be a solid group to contend with.

“I think when you have your D (defensive group) on the field as much as we did as a result of the way things are going, guys get tired and guys get hurt,” added Hofley. “We brought back the really important pieces from that group.”

Hofley said he gets 2016 vibes from this team which was the last time the Redblacks won the Grey Cup.
