Community comes together to support family of storm victim

Robert “Rob” Hayami was playing golf with his son, Owen, when a powerful storm ripped through Ottawa and parts of the province of Ontario on May 21.

The father and son were playing golf at the Cedarhill Golf and Country Club when a tree fell on their golf cart. Owen, 8, was treated at CHEO, while his father was rushed to the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital.

Robert later died from injuries he sustained. He was 49-years-old.

“It's just one of those freak accidents,” said Sam Khan, a close friend of Robert Hayami on The Sam Laprade Show on Monday, June 20. “It happened so quickly.”

Khan said Robert Hayami and his family were scheduled to come over for dinner to his place later on the evening of May 21, when he received a call from Robert Hayami's wife, Kristine, that Rob and Owen had been in an accident.

“It's such a tragdy and I considered Rob to be my best friend,” said Khan.

Since Rob's passing, friends and members of the community have launched a GoFundMe campaign in support of Rob's son Owen as an education fund. To date, the campaign has raised over $19,000. The goal is to raise $80,000.

“The community has stepped up big time,” added Khan.
