OCDSB states COVID measures remain unchanged from what was in place in June

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) said in a statement to CityNews Ottawa on Aug. 25 that health and safety measures in relation to COVID-19 remain generally unchanged from what was implemented before the end of the 2021-2022 school year.

The OCDSB said that mask use will be encouraged when kids go back to school on Sept. 6. Students and staff will also have access to rapid antigen tests if required. According to guidance issued by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the provincial government will continue to provide free masks for students and staff and eye protection for staff, if needed.

Similar to previous years, students and staff will be asked to practice daily screening and stay home if they have any symptoms and to follow the directions of the COVID-19 screening tool.  Since 2020, the OCDSB has taken measures to improve ventilation and air quality in all schools and properties. This includes upgrading the filtration systems for all schools either by augmenting existing filters to MERV-13 type or by introducing permanent UV filtration.

In addition, more than 2300 HEPA filters will be used across OCDSB schools. Other general health practices will continue to be in place such as an emphasis on handwashing and enhanced cleaning measures.

An important new change this year is that COVID-19 vaccinations are now available for the youngest learners. Anyone starting kindergarten this fall or students who have not yet been vaccinated can sign up to get their shot as a further protection.

The OCDSB has continued to make space available for vaccination clinics over the summer months and will work closely with Ottawa Public Health to support vaccination efforts.
